Hip Hop Shop On Blast! Feature: Lyriciss

When asked what he brings to the table in a world where the hip-hop game is oversaturated with bland, formulaic MCs, 21-year-old Washington DC/PG County, Maryland native Lyriciss answers, "A young black voice out of an unknown area (hip-hop wise) speaking on real-life issues with a lyrical focus. Nowadays, you speak to the majority of the other rappers my age from this area, no disrespect to them, but all they're going talk about is what cars they got and really don't got, how much money they have when they really don't have it, and how many females they get when they're really either bunned up with a joint or can't pull a female to save their life." Born in the Riggs Park section of N.E. Washington, D.C., Lyriciss (ne' Robert Bailey) knows both sides of the fence, as he was raised between DC and the Prince George's County, MD suburbs. In 2004, Lyriciss met up with H-Tips and FCG Ent., prompting the beginning of his recording career. Now, at the age of 21, he's already developed the mind of a businessman, focusing on the growth and future of his career. While unsigned to a record deal, he is the driving force behind the burgeoning DMG (DeLorean Music Group) collective and has signed a production deal with Equinox Professionals. He has also been inducted into a group of elite musicians with URB Magazine's Next 1000 Program and has built a strong presence as an up-and-coming force.

I first heard his version of the track "Successful" and I was moved. Every track I've heard from Lyriciss has been dynamic, entertaining, and impressive. I recommend everyone who is a hip hop fan to start listenin to the artist that definitely lives up to his name.

Hip Hop Shop ON BLAST! Feature: J Nolan

J.Nolan(Jamar Nolan) is definitely a rare breed in the new age of Hip-Hop and rap music. The 20 year-old microphone fiend is all about lyrical content while blending his cool multi-syllabic flow with soulful, jazzy beats that accompany his vocals very well. His style alone separates him from anyone coming from his area of Atlanta, Georgia although he is originally from New Haven, Connecticut. Nolan doesn’t try to be anything that he’s not in his music either. He openly admits to not being a thug or anything remotely close to it. As a matter of fact, he claims that hip-hop music played an equal role to his parents when it came to his upbringing with influences such as Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Nas, and Common with a long host of others. By listening to his music you can see that he took the best components from each and compiled them together to create what would be best described as a breath of fresh air. Its quite apparent that he was born to make music not only for himself, but to lead his generation into an era of personal growth while enjoying the experience.

In 2007, Nolan got the seal of approval from DJ/Producer Don Cannon a day after passing him one of his demo CD’s outside of an Atlanta radio station(Hot107.9 fm). On June 10, 2008 the young artist made his first official statement to the world with a mixtape entitled “Fresh Produce” and released it as a free download on the internet. It consists of 100% original material which makes it feel like a full-length album. The song “Saturday Night Fever” brought him a decent amount of recognition due to it being played constantly on college radio in Chicago. UK representative DJ Ames also included the song to his mixtape called Grind Time Volume 5.  Just months later, the “I Am Not A Rapper” mixtape was released on September 26, 2008 and on December 1, 2008 “The Up-Bringing 2.0” was also put out as a free download. The Up-Bringing 2.0 is completely produced by J.Nolan’s cousin Yung B Da Producer and recaps the highs and lows of current hip-hop. The “Soul Brother pt.2” music video was released in December as well in order to gain a bit more attention.

Relentlessy, Nolan continued his barrage of musical output into 2009 when he put out “Not Enough Time,” another completely original project equipped with 19 records. This was released on Feb. 16, 2009 and gained gradual coverage throughout various hip hop websites and blogs. On May 5th, 2009 he released yet another project for free download entitled “Chasing Cool,” which features original production from upcoming producers throughout the world. The project was presented by VIMBY’s(Video In My Backyard) blogsite, Uponthingz.com in hopes of gaining additional exposure. The title song from the tape has been getting played on Jacksonville radio(IRIE 105.7) ever since it was released. The feedback to the record has been strong due to the positive message relayed in the song in which Nolan tells stories of 3 individuals “chasing cool” by conforming to what the urban community would classify as cool. The project as a whole received favorable reviews from different websites all agreeing that J.Nolan is surely a name to look out for in the very near future. Many have compared his penchant for witty wordplay and strong delivery to the likes of Lupe Fiasco, Eminem, and Joe Budden all while remaining his own individual outlook on life and music in general. With a solid 3 years under his belt, its quite apparent that J.Nolan has a very promising career ahead of him once he’s awarded the proper opportunity to show and prove at the next level.

Check these singles from his upcoming mixtape, "Chasing Cool".

FoxxyJay Radio: Artist On Blast Jina Wright

Jina Wright was born Jonessa Johnson in Prentiss, Mississippi. The development of her unique style is the result of a lifetime of musical influence. Growing up in a talented musical family she was always surrounded by different forms of music.

Her first foray into learning an instrument herself came when she started to play the piano at just 3 years old. Later on she began to play trumpet, French horn, baritone and sousaphone, and drums. She utilized her talent by singing, & playing piano for local churches & trumpet at her own church. Jina began writing her own music at 8 years old and began putting her lyrics to music at age 10. She hasn’t stopped since.

After realizing that making music was her main goal, she began to showcase her talent in various talent shows across Mississippi. After high school she became a member of the Florida A&M University Marching 100 where she continued to play trumpet. As her confidence grew and her style developed, she soon decided to compete on a collegiate talent level and began performing in talent shows at Florida A&M Univerisity as well as other off campus talent showcases. After seeing and receiving numerous accolades for her performances she decided to go after her dream of becoming a producer/singer/songwriter.

Jina Wright is currently a part of a production team based out of Atlanta, Georgia where she utilizes her writing skills. She has also just recently established her own production label along with two brothers(Da Sip Productions,LLC).

Jina refuses to think inside of a box. She believes that music speaks what cannot be expressed. She writes from personal experiences, other people’s experiences and things she observes. Her inspiration comes from many great musicians from Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, to great singers & songwriters like Kim Burrell, Prince, Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin, Billy Holiday, Gladys Knight, the Clark Sisters as well as current producers like Brian Cox, Rodney Jerkins, Pharrell, Timbaland, Swizz Beats, Will.i.am., Kanye West.

Jina Wright is currently working on her first self entitled debut album. Some of the songs from that album can be found on her myspace page as well as her soundclick page where they can be downloaded for free.

The Hip-hop Shop's Top Picks

These are some of the hottest joints in rotation on our radio shows. Check em yourself!

Hip Hop Shop On Blast! Feature: Blood Type

Sick of working 9 to 5 jobs Ryan Taylor and Stephan Stevenson knew there had to be a better way. The two decided to follow their dreams and form the rap duo Blood Type. Sick of listening to the same old songs on the radio, the two decided to make a difference. They combine old school vibes while still keeping things fresh. The two vowed to make an undeniable hip hop classic album entitled American Lion.

With demo tapes becoming obsolete and record labels raping artists for their money, the two knew they needed something to set them apart. They decided to create their own
record label, Lionsface Entertainment and a web based talk show of the same name. The show The Lion's Face tackles the hard issues of hip hop and aims to keep the music live through good presentation and intelligent discussion.

The two have many names, Stepson, Chief, and Blood Type but what remains is the commitment to excellence and strict code of honor. The monkey cannot look the lion in the face. They don't ask for your approval, but demand your respect.
