Hip Hop Shop On Blast! Feature: Substance Abuse

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

As opposed to groups who either force change or resist it, Substance Abuse embodies natural progression. The trio creates earnest hip-hop music in the tradition of early 90’s icons like Main Source, Brand Nubian, and Organized Konfusion, combining equal measures of intelligence, clarity, innovation, and polish to evoke the unpretentious consciousness of the Golden Age era, while avoiding corny retro posturing.

MCs Eso Tre and Subz grew up together in Los Angeles, where they became hip-hop fans at an early age. In high school, the duo could often be found in the audience at the legendary Unity events that have since come to define the progressive LA hip-hop scene of the early 90’s. Inspired by those shows emphasis on positive expression through creative art, the friends began working on their own music.

Substance Abuse’s first release was a 1998 split EP with Santa Barbara's mic.edu called Brand New Crime on Rocketship Records. The project received extensive college radio airplay and critical praise, and led to the filming of a video for the track “Spontaneous Egos”, directed by independent filmmaker Jesse Felsot. This was followed by the filming of the video for “Night on the Town” featuring Kool Keith, which can be viewed at www.myspace.com/substanceabuse

In turn, the group's lyrical prowess earned them a slot on Sway and Tech's Wake-Up Show, where they premiered the lead track from their debut single, "What the Fuck You Rhymin' For?". The collection of heartfelt hip-hop tracks on their debut album, Overproof, includes contributions from Saafir, Kool Keith, Motion Man, Kutmasta Kurt, P.E.A.C.E., Rasco, Thes-One, and MF Doom.

Substance Abuse just recently completed their sophomore album, "Background Music", which includes contributions from Tash, Sadat X, Percee P, MC Eiht, Myka Nyne, and Max Julien.

Hip Hop Shop ON BLAST! Feature: Mainevent

With a name like Mainevent this Brooklyn lyricist has a lot to prove to every audience he encounters. Maine as he is called by those who know him best took interest in writting very early on, with short stories poems and was a scholar throughout his entire early life. As the nephew of Jazz trumpeter Buck Clayton and a Jazz flute soloist, at the tender age of 10 music was very much a part Maine's life from an early age. At home Mainevent was exposed to post Harlem Renassaince literature and music of every genre from hip hop's greatest hits to Rock & Roll classics and alternative sounds. By his teen years the lyrical Rembrante discovered and seemingly mastered his Rap skills. Having overcame a slue of obstacles the young MC is now force to be reckoned with in the industry and college rap scene. Mainevent has a sound that easily blends the street savy New York Hip Hop sound with a range of music from Disco to R&B. Mainevent is an avid performer that will take the music world by storm.

Hip Hop Shop On Blast! Feature: Nine Leaves

Nine Leaves’ latest video “Yesterday” debuted at #4 on Billboard’s New Rock Videos, and is currently airing on networks around the world including MTV, Fuse, Music Choice and the VOA Network. Multitalented producer and composer Zack Hemsey has been making adventurous recordings for years – but only recently was his Nine Leaves collective thrust into the national limelight.

The Northern New Jersey act provided a propulsive new look at a Reebok spot featuring Allen Iverson, which turned into a cult favorite among their fans. The Iverson clip quickly became a popular download on YouTube, and viewers began to ask: where can we get this artist’s music? As it turned out, the executives at the NBA were also watching – and they licensed Nine Leaves’ music for use on their highlight shows. And if that’s all you knew about Nine Leaves, you’d probably assume that they were a straightforward mainstream rap act. Well, we’re here to tell you otherwise. That there are plenty of possible commercial applications for Zack Hemsey’s hypnotic soundscapes is indisputable – the Iverson spot proves that to be true. But Hemsey’s heart is in the music, and the emcees who give voice to his compositions are, to a man, thoughtful, impassioned, and poetic.

The rhymes on Peace In Death, the latest Nine Leaves album, have the cadences, depth, and resonance of the best spoken-word. They’re also conceptually linked, and often politically provocative. Peace In Death is a set about the end of an era – songs about finding the strength and balance to survive and move through a deteriorating world. Mortality haunts the album’s verses, but there’s the promise of rebirth, too. Then there’s the music: moody, seething, intoxicating, harmonically and rhythmically sophisticated, and surprisingly multifaceted.

“Yesterday”, the album's kickoff, shows the collective in top form, as each emcee tells a compelling story of perseverance in the face of personal loss. The inviting video gives a glimpse into the lives of each vocalist: we follow them on a typical morning, rapping as they greet each other, their girlfriends, and the day. As befits an act as cinematic as Nine Leaves, the “Yesterday” clip feels like a mini-movie – or perhaps three interlocking mini-movies. Like the song itself,
the footage feels honest, soulful, and confessional, and it welcomes viewers into the collective with open arms.

One thing is for certain: this album delivers in the full sense of the word. It’s a craft of art in a time where works of such caliber have been sorely missing from the world’s main-stage.

Hip Hop Shop On Blast! Feature: Lyriciss

When asked what he brings to the table in a world where the hip-hop game is oversaturated with bland, formulaic MCs, 21-year-old Washington DC/PG County, Maryland native Lyriciss answers, "A young black voice out of an unknown area (hip-hop wise) speaking on real-life issues with a lyrical focus. Nowadays, you speak to the majority of the other rappers my age from this area, no disrespect to them, but all they're going talk about is what cars they got and really don't got, how much money they have when they really don't have it, and how many females they get when they're really either bunned up with a joint or can't pull a female to save their life." Born in the Riggs Park section of N.E. Washington, D.C., Lyriciss (ne' Robert Bailey) knows both sides of the fence, as he was raised between DC and the Prince George's County, MD suburbs. In 2004, Lyriciss met up with H-Tips and FCG Ent., prompting the beginning of his recording career. Now, at the age of 21, he's already developed the mind of a businessman, focusing on the growth and future of his career. While unsigned to a record deal, he is the driving force behind the burgeoning DMG (DeLorean Music Group) collective and has signed a production deal with Equinox Professionals. He has also been inducted into a group of elite musicians with URB Magazine's Next 1000 Program and has built a strong presence as an up-and-coming force.

I first heard his version of the track "Successful" and I was moved. Every track I've heard from Lyriciss has been dynamic, entertaining, and impressive. I recommend everyone who is a hip hop fan to start listenin to the artist that definitely lives up to his name.

Hip Hop Shop ON BLAST! Feature: J Nolan

J.Nolan(Jamar Nolan) is definitely a rare breed in the new age of Hip-Hop and rap music. The 20 year-old microphone fiend is all about lyrical content while blending his cool multi-syllabic flow with soulful, jazzy beats that accompany his vocals very well. His style alone separates him from anyone coming from his area of Atlanta, Georgia although he is originally from New Haven, Connecticut. Nolan doesn’t try to be anything that he’s not in his music either. He openly admits to not being a thug or anything remotely close to it. As a matter of fact, he claims that hip-hop music played an equal role to his parents when it came to his upbringing with influences such as Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Nas, and Common with a long host of others. By listening to his music you can see that he took the best components from each and compiled them together to create what would be best described as a breath of fresh air. Its quite apparent that he was born to make music not only for himself, but to lead his generation into an era of personal growth while enjoying the experience.

In 2007, Nolan got the seal of approval from DJ/Producer Don Cannon a day after passing him one of his demo CD’s outside of an Atlanta radio station(Hot107.9 fm). On June 10, 2008 the young artist made his first official statement to the world with a mixtape entitled “Fresh Produce” and released it as a free download on the internet. It consists of 100% original material which makes it feel like a full-length album. The song “Saturday Night Fever” brought him a decent amount of recognition due to it being played constantly on college radio in Chicago. UK representative DJ Ames also included the song to his mixtape called Grind Time Volume 5.  Just months later, the “I Am Not A Rapper” mixtape was released on September 26, 2008 and on December 1, 2008 “The Up-Bringing 2.0” was also put out as a free download. The Up-Bringing 2.0 is completely produced by J.Nolan’s cousin Yung B Da Producer and recaps the highs and lows of current hip-hop. The “Soul Brother pt.2” music video was released in December as well in order to gain a bit more attention.

Relentlessy, Nolan continued his barrage of musical output into 2009 when he put out “Not Enough Time,” another completely original project equipped with 19 records. This was released on Feb. 16, 2009 and gained gradual coverage throughout various hip hop websites and blogs. On May 5th, 2009 he released yet another project for free download entitled “Chasing Cool,” which features original production from upcoming producers throughout the world. The project was presented by VIMBY’s(Video In My Backyard) blogsite, Uponthingz.com in hopes of gaining additional exposure. The title song from the tape has been getting played on Jacksonville radio(IRIE 105.7) ever since it was released. The feedback to the record has been strong due to the positive message relayed in the song in which Nolan tells stories of 3 individuals “chasing cool” by conforming to what the urban community would classify as cool. The project as a whole received favorable reviews from different websites all agreeing that J.Nolan is surely a name to look out for in the very near future. Many have compared his penchant for witty wordplay and strong delivery to the likes of Lupe Fiasco, Eminem, and Joe Budden all while remaining his own individual outlook on life and music in general. With a solid 3 years under his belt, its quite apparent that J.Nolan has a very promising career ahead of him once he’s awarded the proper opportunity to show and prove at the next level.

Check these singles from his upcoming mixtape, "Chasing Cool".

FoxxyJay Radio: Artist On Blast Jina Wright

Jina Wright was born Jonessa Johnson in Prentiss, Mississippi. The development of her unique style is the result of a lifetime of musical influence. Growing up in a talented musical family she was always surrounded by different forms of music.

Her first foray into learning an instrument herself came when she started to play the piano at just 3 years old. Later on she began to play trumpet, French horn, baritone and sousaphone, and drums. She utilized her talent by singing, & playing piano for local churches & trumpet at her own church. Jina began writing her own music at 8 years old and began putting her lyrics to music at age 10. She hasn’t stopped since.

After realizing that making music was her main goal, she began to showcase her talent in various talent shows across Mississippi. After high school she became a member of the Florida A&M University Marching 100 where she continued to play trumpet. As her confidence grew and her style developed, she soon decided to compete on a collegiate talent level and began performing in talent shows at Florida A&M Univerisity as well as other off campus talent showcases. After seeing and receiving numerous accolades for her performances she decided to go after her dream of becoming a producer/singer/songwriter.

Jina Wright is currently a part of a production team based out of Atlanta, Georgia where she utilizes her writing skills. She has also just recently established her own production label along with two brothers(Da Sip Productions,LLC).

Jina refuses to think inside of a box. She believes that music speaks what cannot be expressed. She writes from personal experiences, other people’s experiences and things she observes. Her inspiration comes from many great musicians from Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, to great singers & songwriters like Kim Burrell, Prince, Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin, Billy Holiday, Gladys Knight, the Clark Sisters as well as current producers like Brian Cox, Rodney Jerkins, Pharrell, Timbaland, Swizz Beats, Will.i.am., Kanye West.

Jina Wright is currently working on her first self entitled debut album. Some of the songs from that album can be found on her myspace page as well as her soundclick page where they can be downloaded for free.

The Hip-hop Shop's Top Picks

These are some of the hottest joints in rotation on our radio shows. Check em yourself!

Hip Hop Shop On Blast! Feature: Blood Type

Sick of working 9 to 5 jobs Ryan Taylor and Stephan Stevenson knew there had to be a better way. The two decided to follow their dreams and form the rap duo Blood Type. Sick of listening to the same old songs on the radio, the two decided to make a difference. They combine old school vibes while still keeping things fresh. The two vowed to make an undeniable hip hop classic album entitled American Lion.

With demo tapes becoming obsolete and record labels raping artists for their money, the two knew they needed something to set them apart. They decided to create their own
record label, Lionsface Entertainment and a web based talk show of the same name. The show The Lion's Face tackles the hard issues of hip hop and aims to keep the music live through good presentation and intelligent discussion.

The two have many names, Stepson, Chief, and Blood Type but what remains is the commitment to excellence and strict code of honor. The monkey cannot look the lion in the face. They don't ask for your approval, but demand your respect.

Hip Hop Shop On Blast! Feature: Jay Rock

For a rapper to command your attention, it all comes down to the voice. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Public Enemy’s Chuck D had millions of fans hanging on to every word of his booming baritone. In the mid-1990s, The Notorious B.I.G.’s steely poise and vocal precision led many critics and fans to proclaim him the best rapper of all time. Now, in 2009, get ready for the next rapper with a magnetic voice, someone whose pristine raps demand attention. His name: Jay Rock.

Born and raised in Watts, California’s notorious Nickerson Gardens Projects, Jay Rock got his first encouragement from his music-making relatives, who noticed the impact his deep, melodic voice made on song after song. “They were like, ‘you’re hard. And you’ve got a voice for it, too,” Jay Rock recalls. “A lot of people started hearing me and they would tell me that my voice catches them. So, I started working it, working on my craft and got more and more confidence.”

Jay Rock’s confidence led to a string of heated appearances on neighborhood mixtapes. The gifted rhymer’s clever phrasing, gritty realism, storytelling swagger and powerful voice grabbed the attention of Top Dawg Entertainment boss Dude Dawg. Once in the studio with an independent company backing him, Jay Rock’s output increased and improved.

After shopping his demo to a number of major labels, Jay Rock and Top Dawg earned a deal with industry powerhouse Warner Bros. Records, also home to E-40, Murs and Talib Kweli, among others. The Warner Bros. executives were impressed with Jay Rock’s distinctive flow, his vivid lyrics and, of course, his “voice”.

What drew me to his music was the realness of his words. He's very descriptive to where you can honestly relate to his music and feel what he's sayin and he's unapologetic. His voice is what commands attention. But his honest words and vibrant lyricism is what keeps you listenin.

Nas and Kelis Divorced!

Vibe just broke the news:

One of hip hop’s most talked about married couples have split. VIBE has confirmed that Nas and Kelis are headed for a divorce. “I can confirm that she has filed for divorce,” a spokesperson for Kelis told VIBE. “We request the media to respect her privacy during this very difficult time.” At around 3:45pm PST, high-powered attorney Laura Wasser (who has also represented Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie, and Stevie Wonder) filed a divorce petition today on behalf of Kelis, citing irreconciable differences. The bombshell comes amid recent reports that the acclaimed rhymer and influential R&B vixen were expecting their first child together—a son. Kelis is currently seven months pregnant.

It was only last February when Nas spoke excitedly to MTV about the prospect of having a baby with Kelis. “Yeah, man, I find out what it's gonna be next week, so I'm happy," said the multiplatinum rapper, who also has a 15-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.

Nas and Kelis first met in 2002 at a MTV Video Music Awards afterparty thrown by hip hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs. “I wasn’t going to go, but I’m glad I did,” Nas told VIBE in June 2003. “Then at the afterparty, I met my girl.” Kelis remembered the meeting with her future husband vividly: “Everyone moves out of the way, and Nas stands up, and I put my hand out, and I’m like, Hey, I’m Kelis. And he goes, ‘Who?’… So I’m crawling into a fucking hole, and he’s like, ‘Wait-huh? What’s your name? And I’m like, Kelis, and he’s like, ‘Oh, well that’s great, because I’ve been waiting to make you my wife all these years.’” When Nas told her of his bold marital plans, she replied in typical Kelis form. “That’s great, because that’s all I wanna be.”

After dating for two years, the pair married in a small ceremony in Atlanta on July 28, 2003. Their relationship even sparked artistic collaborations, with Nas appearing on Kelis’ sensual single "In Public," featured on her 2003 release Tasty (Star Trak/Arista). Kelis returned the favor on the Queensbridge, N.Y., MC’s controversial 2006 work Hip Hop Is Dead (Def Jam) on “Not Going Back.” Yet, since March of 2008, rumors of the couple separating have been circulating on the Web. Nas’ spokesperson could not be reached for comment.

On Blast : R.O.M.E.

The FoxxyJay Radio Show Lets It Go with R.O.M.E. Tonight

In 2003 R.O.M.E. founded the label Dynasty Enterprise Music Group with his business partner and manager Junior Houser. He has released 6 successful mixtapes including his Dynasty Enterprise Underground Mixtape series and flooded over 70,000 through the streets and internet. In the summer of 2006 he appeared on the Underground Talent Mart (UTM) TV Show in Atlanta to debut his song "We Don't Dance" to 19 markets including New York, St. Louis, Birmingham, and Hawaii. The performance led to several club dates and performing for the likes of Grand Hustle, Juvenile, Da Brat, and producer Shondrae to name a few.

In the early winter of 2006, the debut from the DEMG label titled R.O.M.E. & DY Enterprise Presents "We Takin' Over" was nearly completed and slated for a March release. With collaborations from Bigg D of Da Original Too Deep and stellar production from SSC Productions, over 40 tracks were recorded for a 17 slot album. The remaining material, exclusive freestyles, and remixes were released January 27 with the South's 1 DJ, DJ Smallz "Mr. Southern Smoke". The DJ Smallz & R.O.M.E. Before The Takeover mixtape contained the singles "What It Is" and "I'm Tha Man" off the upcoming album and received a 3.5/5 review in the June issue of Ozone Magazine.

With cosigns from several key industry players, R.O.M.E. was hand picked by DJ Smallz and others to lead the movement for the new generation of southern artists to stabilize Hip Hop's growing southern genre. With future appearances on Fear Factor mixtapes, an undeniable flow, compelling passion, and razor sharp lyrics, R.O.M.E. is poised as the next best thing from the South.
